History of Moroccan Wicker Baskets


Moroccan baskets have an interesting, ancient history. Centuries ago, these baskets were handmade by tribesmen with no manufacturing-like tools. Gradually, this skill made its presence felt in Spain and from there, it found a way into the Arab world. You can call this the globalization of Moroccan handicraft that is now witnessing a revival.

Raw Materials for Moroccan Baskets :

 
The different raw materials for Moroccan baskets are collected from specific regions of Morocco. 

  • Dwarf Palm Leaf— Found in Atlas and RIF Mountains
  • Giant Palm Leaf—collected in the south of Morocco
  • Rustic Palm Leaf—collected from west of Morocco
  • Sea Grass: Growing on the side of the river, in the south of the country.
  • Leather tanned by hand
  • For the handles, only cow skin is used. Artisans generally refrain from use of camel skin.

Production:

The production process is uncomplicated as no machinery is involved. Skilled Moroccan women hand-weave the baskets with the raw material provided to them and then the baskets are collected from each and every village. The period for knitting is about one day but differs on the intricacies for each kind of basket.      

Manufacturing: 

These baskets are handmade by Moroccan Berber Women of the Atlas, in the region of Marrakech. The assembly of leather holders and lean fabric and adornment are made in the medina of Marrakech.
